“How on earth did I end up changing a diaper?
For the third time.
I vowed never to change another diaper about 16 years ago, right after my youngest outgrew them.
Since then, I’ve steered clear of any diaper duties. Not happening.
I’m more than happy to hold a child. I’ve still got that charm that tiny tots can’t resist. They adore me.
But the second I catch a whiff of caca? Straight back to Mama or Papa they go.
Fast forward to the present, and here I am, having volunteered for this very duty.
You see, my daughter became a mother, turning me into a soft-hearted, weak old Abuelito.
Since her little one arrived, she’s barely had a moment to herself. So, out of the blue, I found myself saying, “You know, I’d be happy to look after the little guy for a few hours if you and your partner fancy a date night.”
I genuinely believed she wouldn’t trust her old man with her precious bundle.
But just a few hours later, she messaged: “Can you watch him tomorrow night?”
Me: “Tomorrow, as in the day after today? Sure.”
My significant other was instantly skeptical, mainly because of my long-standing no-diaper rule. She’d never seen me change one. Why start now?
Well, I’d never been the grandpa to this particular kiddo before. He’s my little dude.
I can’t believe I just said that.
But guess what? I nailed it. Changed three diapers like a pro. My technique? Flawless. Even had to make a last-minute move to shield myself from a surprise pee attack.
He thought he could catch me off guard? Think again, sucka.
Life has a funny way of teaching us flexibility.
Just when we think we’ve set our boundaries, a new chapter begins, and we find ourselves bending your own rules.
So, the next time you say “never” to something, remember that shit happens.
Stay ready, my friends.
